My First Post

I believe in America.

Every time the far right conservatives talk about Ronald Regan I think they prove they were not paying attention to the man. When Reagan came to office, Americans were pessimistic and thought the rest of the world was going to pass us by. We acted like Japan was going to be the dominate economic power in the world and the USSR was going to be the top superpower. Reagan reminded all of us what it is to be American. He reminded us of our place in the world and our responsibility. Reagan was right when he said America is the “shinning city on the hill”. In time the country turned a corner and once again recognized that Regan was right. This is the best country in the world.

It seams like too many people have forgotten what America is about. Political commentaries are always about how bad the country is doing. All they talk about is how this group or that country is going to ruin the USA. This is the wrong way to fix what needs to be fixed. The only people that can destroy the USA is us by attacking each other.

We are the shining city on the hill. That is not to say that life is perfect or that there are no challenges. But, we are a free and strong country. We can make the country better and this is what I’m going to write about.

  1. I would love to be able to contribute to your blog. I was about to start one myself but Google led me to you. There's too much damn pessimism and people getting caught up in the wrong things when there's so much amazing good work going on in this country.

Sure, we're transitioning to an information-saturated democracy, which can only help it get stronger, and sure, the tea party has it's crazies. But come on, the crazies have always been around. People confuse the fact that we have much more access to data with the idea that the data is trending somewhere. Ex: The idea that all of a sudden there are more crazies. No, we actual just hear more about them. There are most likely less of them, because it's harder to be anonymously crazy in this day and age.

Violent crime is at an all time low, which no-one seems to be able to explain (the internet? better policing? legalized abortion?). Immigrants still want to move to the U.S. in droves, not that we allow them to. Our education system allows an incredible amount of experiential learning that the Chinese can't even imagine. Marijuana is becoming decriminalized. Gay marriage is slowly becoming legal. The drug war is starting to end (it's happening, albeit VERY slowly). And don't get me started on Sarah Palin! She's one of the least liked VP candidates in US history! If she annoys you, turn off cable news! You'll be better informed as a result.

A better, more rational nation is already here, just hasn't quite tipped over yet. Our best times are ahead.
